Is the spiritual in art outdated? As a young artist in the 1960’s Geoffrey Koetsch was in the thrall of Kandinsky’s Concerning the Spiritual in Art. In the Seventies it was Jung and Campbell and The Perennial Philosophy. A self-described spiritual junkie, Koetsch once said “I never discovered a religion I didn’t like.” Spiritual themes have dominated his work for over forty years. Now in his seventies, seeing his pursuit reaching maturity, he asks the question: has the spiritual in art become irrelevant to the contemporary art world? In digital slide format, Koetsch will show select key works of his artistic journey over the years as well as his recent improvised mixed media “Wall Compositions.” In addition he will premier an 18 minute video of “The Preparation,” a performance taped at the 2014 First Biennial Festival of Sound Art and Performance Art at The Quarry
A retrospective Exhibition of Geoffrey's work will be on display at the Quarry from July 4th to the 31st, with an opening reception on Sunday July 6th.
Rub a Dub Dub, May 3rd at Mobius
An irreverent confrontation with aging and its accompanying advance of wisdom and foolishness. The performance juxtaposes irony and utter sincerity, the whole is soaked in pathos. Koetsch appears simultaneously as wise man, fool, and Buddha. The event ends appropriately in bone ash on a burning ground–Koetsch’s signature action.
